Take advantage of this rare opportunity to own over 7 private acres abutting open space in desirable Mill Valley! Consider the possibilities of what might be created on this property where remnants of its storied histories leave behind inspiration for new potentials. Reminiscent of the Gatsby era, there is a grandeur to the estate, despite its' weathered appearance, with the artistry of the original designs still apparent.  Equally, there is a tranquility to the property created by the well conceived design and layout of the structures which blend seamlessly into the wooded setting. Despite being surrounded by redwoods, the clearing provides for a sunny level area. The main parcel has a 3,642 square foot main home with 4 Bedrooms and 3.5 Bathrooms as well as a small artist's studio, and an additional sleeping cabin.  Decks on many levels entice one outside to bask in the sunshine surrounded by the canopy of Redwoods. On the main level, a grand room comprised of the kitchen, living room and dining space features views in four directions, fine wood details and a grand stone fireplace with a gas stove insert.  The bedrooms are large in scale and also have fine wood details and well placed windows bringing in light and forested views in many directions.  Restore what is already there to a new version of its beauty or begin with a new vision, inspired by the setting.

Family-friendly Mill Valley is all about schools and sports. Nestled at the foot of Mount Tamalpais, homes in the Marin County city range from 500-square-foot hunter's cabins to multimillion-dollar mansions tucked away on winding, narrow lanes under the redwoods. Coffee is king in Mill Valley. Downtown, three separate coffee shops do a brisk business. At the Depot, as the sunny town center is called, moms with strollers, kids on tricycles, and teenagers kicking hacky sacks relax in the open-air plaza, which now houses an independent bookstore and cafe. The Depot is also a jumping-off spot for hikers and mountain bikers heading up the slopes of Mount Tamalpais. Nightlife in Mill Valley is anchored by Sweetwater Music Hall, which hosts many well-known musical acts. As the groomed playing fields at the community center attest, sports are big in Mill Valley, with soccer, baseball, and lacrosse leagues all popular.

What We Love

First and foremost is the land. The property is on a 3 acre parcel that has a large level, sunny area even though it is in the middle of a redwood forest. It abuts against Marin Open Space and offers an outdoor playground in your own backyard for any natural lover. The other two parcels that are adjacent and offered for sale with 800 Lovell are 1.41 and 2.76 acres, respectively, resulting in over 7 total acres, arguably the largest privately owned parcel in Mill Valley.

The vistas of natural beauty are unparalleled. The property literally includes a private redwood forest. There are multiple oversized decks built from all levels of the house that offer extreme privacy and beauty. They are situated so as to be in the sun so they can be enjoyed throughout the year.

In spite of it being deep in the canyon, it is not isolated. Neighbors are on all sides of the property but they are nestled into the hills so there is a feeling a privacy without isolation.

The public room in the main house is breathtaking. It is built with materials that are not commonly used anymore. There is floor-to-ceiling oak wood throughout the living room/dining room/kitchen area. The ceiling height and wall of windows showcasing the natural outdoor beauty adds to the majestic feel of the house. The wood stove installed in the out-sized stone fireplace can heat the whole floor. The scale of this room is grand but the feeling it exudes is homey.

Granted, there are many quirky and funky aspects to the main house, but it seems to work pretty well overall as a big, warm hug in the middle of nature. The bathrooms all need to be repaired/remodeled since they were done in a piecemeal fashion, but the important parts are there for someone who likes this main structure. If not, another vision could be well accommodated on such a beautiful piece of land.

We love the exquisite little cabin that was built behind the main house. It would be perfect for an art studio, study, yoga retreat, private library; I could go on. It is currently rented for the ungodly sum of $3,000 a month, so it is also pretty darn good as an investment property. The structure was built in the 1990s to code but without permits. The materials used reflect an artisan mentality and it was designed to complement the main house. It has its’ own large, flat, sunny yard.

For the imaginative, there are a couple other unique things about the property. There is a sleeping room built up the hill on the property which is very cute; for those who need to get away from getting away from it all. There is also a structure that looks like an M.C.Escher drawing that is a tree house but in reality it is a death trap; better not to climb up it. There is an empty pool and old jacuzzi that hasn’t worked in the last 40 years, but it could be a cool outdoor area with a significant capital expense!

Everyone that has lived in the canyon for a while has a story about this property. It has a colorful history of being the home of Sly and the Family Stone at one point; rumors have it that there were tigers on the property in the past. It is distinctive. It is unique. A property such as this does not come up for sale often.
